Privacy policy
AlongWell keeps a family’s medicines, reminders and home readings in one place. Most of what it holds is health information, so this page says plainly what the app and this website collect, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
AlongWell is made by PrimeRole, Inc., 2261 Market St, San Francisco, California 94114-1612, United States. We decide how the information described here is used, and we are the ones to write to about it: hello@alongwell.app.
What the app collects
Your account
Your phone number. It is how you sign in: we send a one-time code to it by WhatsApp or SMS. The code is stored in a scrambled form and expires after ten minutes. If you change your number, we send one message to the old one to say the account has moved.
Your profile
Your name, gender and date of birth.
The people you care for
For each family member you add: the name you call them, how they are related to you, their gender and date of birth, and for a pet, its kind and breed. Each person has a timezone, so reminders arrive at their local time. You can add a profile photo for anyone, yourself included. If you ask us to remind a family member on WhatsApp, we keep the WhatsApp number you give for them.
Health information you enter
- Medicines: the name, form, strength, dose and schedule, when each started and stopped, and why it was stopped.
- Doses: whether each was taken, skipped or snoozed, when, and the amount where a dose varies.
- Home readings: blood pressure, blood glucose, weight, oxygen saturation, temperature and pulse, with the date, the time and any note you add.
- Allergies: what each person is allergic to, whether it is a medicine, a food or something else, and any note you add.
- Supplies: how much of each medicine you have at home, and when you last counted.
- Household settings: meal times, which reminders are built on, and the units you prefer.
Your phone
A push notification token, so reminders reach your phone; the app version; and whether the phone runs iOS or Android.
Reminders on WhatsApp
If you turn them on, medicine reminders go to your phone number on WhatsApp, or to a family member’s WhatsApp number. A family member first gets a message asking whether they want reminders at that number, and reminders start only if they reply yes. We keep a record of each message we send: the number it went to, what kind of message it was and the doses it was about. A reply such as Taken or Skip today marks that dose in your records, as a tap in the app would.
Technical records
Our servers keep standard logs of requests, including the IP address they came from, to keep the service secure and to fix problems. We do not use them to profile you.
The app does not use advertising identifiers, analytics or tracking libraries, and it does not read your location or contacts. It uses the camera or your photo library only when you add a profile photo, and takes only the picture you choose.
If the app fails, it sends a crash report: what went wrong and where in the app, the phone’s model and system version, the app’s version, and an identifier for this copy of the app. A report does not carry your name or phone number, and we do not put your records in it.
How we use it
- To run the app: to keep your family’s records, show them on your phone and keep a copy on our servers so they survive a lost phone.
- To send reminders, to your phone and, where you turn it on, on WhatsApp. A reminder names the person and the medicines that are due, and it can show on the lock screen.
- To sign you in and keep the account safe. An account is signed in on one phone at a time; signing in on another phone signs the first one out.
- To answer you when you write to us.
We do not sell your information, use it for advertising, build profiles from it or use it to train machine learning models.
Text messages
The one text message AlongWell sends is the sign-in code you ask for. On the sign-in screen you enter your phone number and tap Send code, and one message goes to that number: by SMS in the United States and Canada, on WhatsApp elsewhere, or the other way if you ask for it under the code boxes. Nothing is sent until you tap. The only other text is the one your old number gets when you change your number. There are no marketing texts, and reminders never come by SMS.
How many codes you get depends on how often you sign in or change your number. The app stays signed in, so a code is needed when you sign in on a phone, not every day. Message and data rates may apply, and your carrier charges them.
SMS codes come from +1 (628) 296-1730. Reply STOP to that number to stop texts from it, and HELP for help. With texts stopped you can still sign in with a code on WhatsApp. Text messages from AlongWell has the details, with a picture of the sign-in screen.
Who else sees it
A small number of companies help us run AlongWell. Each receives only what it needs for its job.
- Twilio delivers sign-in codes by SMS and WhatsApp, so it receives your phone number and the code, and it delivers the message to your old number if you change it. It also delivers reminders on WhatsApp where you have turned them on, so it receives the WhatsApp number, the text of each message, which names the person and the medicine due, and any reply. WhatsApp messages also pass through Meta’s WhatsApp Business platform.
- Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers reminders to your phone, and on an iPhone it hands them to Apple’s push notification service. They receive your device token and the text of each reminder, which names the person and the medicines due. Google’s Firebase Crashlytics receives the crash reports described above.
- DigitalOcean hosts our servers and database, in Bangalore, India.
- Cloudflare serves this website, carries the traffic between the app and our servers, and holds profile photos and our encrypted backups.
We do not share your information with anyone else, unless the law requires it or you ask us to.
We do not share, sell or provide your mobile phone number, or your consent to receive text messages, to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Twilio receives the number only to deliver the messages.
Where it is kept
Your records live on servers in India. Profile photos and backups are held with Cloudflare, which may store them outside India. This website runs on Cloudflare’s network around the world, and what the app sends to our servers passes through that network on its way.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. When you remove a family member, a medicine or a reading in the app, it leaves your screens but stays in your account’s records, so your history is complete if you need it.
When you delete your account, reminders stop at once, and we remove the account and everything in it from our live systems within 30 days. Signing in again before then cancels the deletion. After that, copies in backups are overwritten within 30 days. Sign-in codes expire after ten minutes, and server logs are kept for up to 30 days.
Your choices
- Everything you have entered is in the app, where you can change or remove it.
- You can delete your account from Settings in the app, or by writing to us. We confirm a written request with the phone number on the account before acting on it. How to delete your account has the steps.
- Reminders on your phone are notifications, and your phone’s settings control them. Turning them off stops the reminders and nothing else. Reminders on WhatsApp are turned on and off in the app, and whoever receives them can reply “stop” to end them.
- Depending on where you live, the law may give you rights to see, correct, erase or receive a copy of your information, to withdraw consent, and to complain to a data protection authority. This includes India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act and, if you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, the GDPR. Write to us and we will help.
Children
AlongWell is for adults. You must be 18 or over to hold an account. You may keep records about children in your care, and you are responsible for having the right to do so. We do not knowingly collect information from a child directly.
Security
Everything between the app and our servers travels over HTTPS. Sign-in codes are stored in a scrambled form, an account is signed in on one phone at a time, and signing out from Settings ends the session on that phone. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you.
This website
The site itself collects nothing. It sets no cookies and uses no trackers or analytics. Your light or dark choice is kept in your browser and never leaves it. Cloudflare, which serves the site, keeps standard request logs.
Changes
We update this page when the app changes what it collects or how it uses it. The date at the top says when it last changed. If a change matters to you, we say so in the app before it applies.
